Mental health issues surge as pandemic persists

The Covid restrictions and nine months of home confinement have exacerbated sleep disorders and feelings of hopelessness among girls, boys and adolescents, a University of Guadalajara psychologist says.

Teresita Villaseñor Cabrera made the observations after conducting a survey of adolescents and young people, from 12 to 18 years old.

She said students will face a new challenges when in-person classes resume, scheduled in Jalisco on January 26, depending in the development of the pandemic. She suggested students start to become accustomed to the new normal by establishing routines ahead of time that are as close as possible to what is done at school.  She also said some students will experience problems with socialization and teamwork.

Since April, the Jalisco Health Secretariat (SSJ), through the Jalisco Institute of Mental Health (SALME), has provided guidance to cope with anxiety or stress derived from the pandemic and the restrictions implemented. It recommends that girls, boys and adolescents follow a routine, with regular meal, bath and sleep schedules, and time for recreational or leisure activities.

Adults, adolescents and children suffering from emotional trauma can call the 24-hour state-operated hotline, at 075 or 332-504-2020, or consult https://quererteencasa.jalisco.gob.mx for more information.
