Mosaic mural unveiled

Dignitaries gathered Monday for the inauguration of a new “mosaic” mural depicting Friar Antonio Alcalde, located on the Paseo Alcalde at the intersection of Normalistas near the Normal traffic circle.

pg5bCreated by artists Jorge Monroy of Guadalajara and Sergio Hernández of Oaxaca, the mural is made up of 540,000 pieces of 1x1 centimeter stone cubes known as tessera.

At the opening, Monroy said the mural is “told through elements that are associated with the legacy of a man who helped bring out the best in the city’s inhabitants: human charity.”

Guadalajara Mayor Pablo Lemus said Alcalde distinguished himself by supporting the most unprotected, helpless people. “He had the vision of building the civil hospital, thinking of all the people who were affected years before by a plague.”

See next week’s Reporter for a story by John Pint on how his friend Monroy, one of Guadalajara’s most acclaimed artists, co-developed this impressive mural.
