City hall staffers take over garbage collection duties

The piles of uncollected garbage piled up on the streets of Guadalajara are finally shrinking, mostly thanks to an emergency program put in place by the municipal government.

pg6aCity hall mobilized 150 trucks from its own vehicle fleet and rented others in an effort to clear the trash backlog, caused, according to garbage concessionary Caabsa Eagle, by the adverse rainy season weather conditions.  City hall staffers from various departments were drafted in to help out and collect the excess garbage.

The situation was becoming distressing for residents of some neighborhoods who said they hadn’t seen a Caabsa Eagle truck for two weeks.

This week, Guadalajara Mayor Pablo Lemus said the response by city authorities had been successful, noting that garbage collection was operating at 90 percent of its capacity.

Lemus said that Caabsa will bear the cost of the emergency collection program.

Householders in municipal Guadalajara still awaiting garbage collection should call the 070 Citizen Attention (Atención Ciudadana) number or 333-610-1010.
