The Fiestas de Octubre: the month-long state fair with a very Mexican flavor

Guadalajara’s annual month-long “State Fair,” the Fiestas de Octubre, gets underway on Friday, September 29, offering provides plenty of Mexican-style fun and games, food and entertainment for all ages.

pg6Located in the Benito Juarez complex on the northern perimeter of the city, the fairground opens to the public each day at 11 a.m. but the real action doesn’t begin until the evening hours. Nevertheless, there are literally hundreds of food stands, vendors’ booths, children’s and adult displays and mechanical games to while away the time before the entertainment begins.

The admission price for adults of 50 pesos (30 pesos for children aged 2-13) includes admittance to the main show—usually musical—each evening around 7 p.m. in the complex’s large forum.  Performances by well-known names cover a mixed bag of rock, pop, mariachi and banda, plus one lucha libre event on October 1.  The free seating is in the upper part of the arena; tickets can be purchased for chairs inside the arena and close to the stage, from 250 to 2,800 pesos (from boletomovil.com).

Big names include Black Eyed Peas (October 4), El Tri (October 6), Jesse and Joy (October 9), Molotov (October 22), and Ha-ash (October 24).
