Guadalajara Mayor Pablo Lemus will take a leave of absence as of October 30, the day he said he will register as a “pre-candidate” for the Citizens Movement (MC) primary process for the 2024 Jalisco gubernatorial election.
Lemus has never hidden his desire to follow in the footsteps of Enrique Alfraro, who also left the Guadalajara mayor’s office in 2017 to run—successfully—for governor.
Lemus said that legally he could continue as mayor while campaigning, but this would be “ethically and morally wrong.”
Meanwhile, Zapopan Mayor Juan José Frangie announced that he will step down on November 17 to begin his campaign for a second consecutive three-year term. Only presidentes municipales (mayors) in Jalisco are able to stand for re-election.
