City’s cardinal calls it a day but won’t step down just yet

Cardinal Francisco Robles Ortega, the Roman Catholic archbishop of Guadalajara, has announced that Pope Francisco has accepted his resignation, although he will continue as the leader of the archdiocese for a little longer.

pg7b copyRobles said he requested permission to leave his post after reaching 75, the official maximum age to hold the position.

He said that before sending the letter of resignation to the Vatican, he reflected on how after 33 years as a bishop, he believed it was time to have “another rhythm of life.”  Robles added that the injection of youth into episcopal life is healthy and provides more energy for the church.

However, at their first face-to-face meeting after sending the letter, Robles said Pope Francisco asked him to continue in office for the time being.  “It’s what God decided through his representative the Pope,” Robles said.
