Awning collapse claims a life; authorities urge concrete structure inspections as rains intensify

On Tuesday, June 10, a 60-year-old woman tragically died after being struck by falling concrete from the awning of a store in the Obregón shopping area of downtown Guadalajara. The collapse occurred around 2:30 p.m. at the corner of Obregón and José María Mercado. The awning measured approximately six by one meters.

It was confirmed that the unlucky woman was simply passing by the store at the time of the incident. Guadalajara Municipal Civil Protection could not determine whether the collapse was caused by overnight rainfall softening the awning material or by longer-term structural issues.

Walls collapse

Meanwhile, the storm that pummeled the metro area in the early hours of Tuesday caused part of the perimeter wall of José Rosas Moreno Elementary School in Tonalá to collapse. Also on Tuesday, a wall surrounding the workshops of the city’s Light Train Network (Siteur) in the Tetlán neighborhood of Guadalajara collapsed. No one was injured in either of the incidents, according to local emergency services.

With the rainy season intensifying, authorities have urged the public to check the condition of their walls, roofs, and similar structures.
