Deluges help Lake Cajititlan to flourish

While its waters may not be the cleanest in the region, Lake Cajititlan, Chapala’s “younger sibling,” has benefiting hugely from the rainy season.

According to Tlajomulco municipal officials, the lake has recuperated 40 percent of its H2O in the past two months and is now filled to 85 percent of its capacity – considerably higher than Lake Chapala, which, despite the recent heavy rainfall, is still only 41.67 percent full.

Since May, the level of Lake Cajititlan has risen by 20 centimeters, noted Rafael Cervantes, director of the Tlajomulco Water Authority. If precipitation continues at the current rate, he said the lake could reach its maximum capacity by the end of September.

A much smaller body of water than Chapala, Lake Cajititlan currently has a depth of 3.5 meters at its center point, Cervantes said.
