Rarely seen owl broadcasts its presence

The Lake Chapala Birders report that they have received many reports of Ajijic and San Juan Cosalá residents who have heard the call of the Great Horned Owl around 10 p.m. and again in the pre-dawn hours.

The Great Horned Owl is the largest and most common owl, recognized by its large size, ear tufts and its “c’koo hooo hoo” call. One owl was spotted in the daytime in a tall tree near Hacienda La Cristina. This common bird is rarely seen because it usually sleeps during the day.
