The Jocotepec municipal government is progressively implementing strict regulation of motorcycle traffic, starting with a crackdown on the use of helmets and a limit of two passengers aboard each vehicle.
Fines applied for using motorized two-wheelers without a helmet will runs to 800 pesos per violation, increasing to at least 1,000 pesos for repeat offenders.
The safety program will be expanded as of January to include penalties for motorcyclists who circulate without license tags, registration documents and valid driver permits.
Jocotepec Mayor José Miguel Gómez justified the tough measures in videos posted on the government’s Facebook page, noting that injuries and fatalities from roadway accidents have increased on a par with a steady rise in local motorcycle traffic.
