India in the limelight at Carnaval Chapala

Chapala’s annual Carnaval blowout is in full swing this weekend, and will run through Tuesday, February 25, keeping the town jumping with all the usual festive happenings, plus a variety of special activities putting guest country India in the limelight.

Look for a sampling of India’s gastronomy, artistry and culture showcased in an exhibition pavilion set up in the inner reaches of the Cristiania Park fairgrounds close to the pool area.  The country will also be featured in stage presentations scheduled nightly in the Teatro del Pueblo amphitheater, starting at 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday, and at 9 p.m. on the last two days (Monday and Tuesday).

A performance of the romantic Ghoomar dances from the state of Rajasthan is on the bill for Friday, February 21.

The Saturday, February 22 program features the exotic moves of the Bharatanatyam style from Tamil Nadu.

High-octane Punjabi Bhangra and Bollywood dances are slated for Sunday, February 23.

Daytime activities will include a Bollywood dance class set for Friday, a conference on tantric yoga on Saturday, and a cricket exhibition game on Monday, all at 4 p.m.
