Moy Anaya undecided on reelection bid

Chapala Mayor Moisés Anaya has not yet made up his mind on whether to run for reelection or seek other political fortunes after his term of office ends September 30, 2021.

He told the Guadalajara Reporter he will make a decision after testing the political waters early next year.

Jalisco voters will go to the polls on Sunday, June 6 to elect 125 presidentes municipales (mayors). 38 state legislators and 20 federal congressional deputies.

The election calendar marks November 13 as the deadline for political parties to notify election authorities of their respective methods for selecting candidates. The pre-campaign or primary process will take place from January 24 to February 12, with registration of approved candidacies formalized on April 3. The campaign season will run from April 4 through June 2, despite an initiative by the state legislature aimed at reducing the period to just 30 days, which was overturned this week by the nation’s Supreme Court.

Next year’s election will be the second time since the Mexican Revolution that the state’s mayors and local legislators are being allowed to run for consecutive three-year terms. In 2018, former mayor Javier Degollado lost his attempt at reelection, placing a distant third behind Anaya who defeated second-runner Alejandro Aguirre by a razor-thin 14-vote margin.
