Fiesta Purépecha returns to Ajijic

Immerse yourself in the state of Michocán’s diverse handicraft industry and culture at the Fiesta Purépecha scheduled Friday, December 15 through Sunday, December 17 at the Ajijic plaza.

This marks the return of an event that has been hosted by Ajijic many times, on and off for more than two decades.

Artisans from various Michocán towns will sell their goods from stalls around the square.

The state is renowned for the wide array of traditional crafts produced by its indigenous people, such as dishware, pottery vessels and ceramic figurines, embroidered clothing, rebozo shawls and other textiles, copperware and metal work, wood carvings and utensils, gilded lacquerware, straw decorations, and basketry.

Michoacán artisans are known for their distinctive materials and design styles, historically tied to traditional practices of the pre-Hispanic era and the impulse of Vasco de Quiroga, the region’s first Catholic Bishop who assigned specific crafts to different villages to strengthen local economies.

This weekend’s festival will feature presentations of the state’s iconic folk dances and tastings of unique culinary specialties such as corundas, a petite type of tamales, chiripu beef stew and handmade blue corn tortillas.
