Time off for Christmas break

Monday, December 25 and Monday, January 1 are statutory holidays everywhere in Mexico. Salaried employee are entitled to a paid day off from their labors, or triple normal daily wages if they work.

Banks, government offices in the Chapala area and some local restaurants and commercial businesses will close on those dates. Most Chapala government employees are granted vacation time from December 18 until January 3. However, the police departments and the municipality’s Civil Protection unit will be on active duty 24/7, with other vital public services maintained as usual, and essential administrative duties handled by skeleton office staff from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Garbage collection services will be suspended on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day due to the closure of the solid waste disposal facility on those dates.

The Chapala branch of the Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM) will remain open at its regular hours, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., except for December 25 and January 1. According to the state Department of Education calendar, public and private schools will be on holiday from December 18 until January 8.
