PAN and PRI to team up for Chapala election

Érika Eryn Torres Herrera and Caros García Robles, respective municipal directors of Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) and Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), have announced the formation of the Fuerza y Corazón por Chapala coalition to select a unity mayoral candidate for the 2024 local election.

They intend to also rope in affiliates of Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD) to round out a broad political alliance. During a joint press conference held last week, Torres and García explained that they will hold work sessions during this month to define a methodology for reviewing profiles of individuals who are best suited to head the coalition ticket, modeled after the federal and state Frente Amplio por México opposition block. The selection of the definitive candidate will be announced in January.

Chapala has been ruled predominately by PRI during modern times, with PAN holding the reins of power in six administrations since 1992, and Movimiento Ciudadano (MC) in charge once from 2018 to 2020.
