Can Chapala water supply weather dry season?

The drastic drought that is prevailing throughout Mexico has many lakeside inhabitants wondering whether local communities will run out of water before the summer rains replenish the area’s aquifers.

pg1bAntonio Monreal Mendoza, general director of Chapala’s Simapa water and sewage utility, is confident that with proper management and conservation practices by users, the municipality has sufficient water resources to see through the remainder of this year’s dry season.

In an interview with the Guadalajara Reporter this week, Mendoza stressed that the agency has made strides in improving the Simapa system over the past three years, making up for the deficiencies in management and maintenance under previous municipal administrations.

He said Simapa currently has 30 wells in operation to supply Chapala and its delegations of Ajijic, San Antonio Tlayacapan, Santa Cruz de la Soledad, San Nicolás de Ibarra and Atotonilquillo. The consistent upkeep and repair of several wells has kept them in service despite occasional breakdowns and failures in power provided by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), he explained. Perforation of new wells is underway in the upper Chapala Barrio de Santa María and in San Nicolás.
