Fans of Mexican folk art are in for a huge treat with the grand opening of the Colección de Recuerdos museum, scheduled for Thursday, March 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. The museum is located at Calle Marcos Castellanos 10, a couple of doors below Ajijic’s San Andrés church.
This fabulous gift to the lakeside community is the brainchild and labor of love created by avid collector Cathey Merrill. It is also a tribute to her late husband Ron, with whom she spent more than a quarter of a century exploring Mexico to find and acquire hundreds of examples of handicrafts made by talented artisans.
Many of the pieces have been displayed over the last few years at the Muestra de Arte Popular (MAPA) gallery across the street at the Efrén González art studio. Others have been brought down from Merrill’s private home.
