As Lake Chapala continues on a steady rise, Chapala Mayor Joaquín Huerta went into the muck last Sunday to lead a team of 50 volunteers in a clean-up of aquatic weeds that are creeping up on the town’s waterfront. 

The third annual Chapala Festival del Tequila is scheduled to run Friday, August 14 through Sunday, August 16 at the waterfront Malecón.

Ixtlahuacan de Los Membrillos was the venue for last weekend’s Campeonato Nacional de Ciclismo Infantil y Juvenil, in which more than 400 young cyclists from across the country tested their mettle in races for competitors aged five to 14.

Chapala’s Urban Development department (DDU) has ordered the suspension of the renovation of the Ajijic pier and remodeling of adjacent restaurant bar until the building’s owner, Héctor Fabio Rizzo Jasso, obtains written authorization from the National Water Commission (Conagua), the federal agency responsible for supervising Lake Chapala’s federal zone.

Two elderly expatriates who lived alone have been found dead in their homes over the past two weeks. Both apparently expired due to natural causes.

It’s quince-picking season in the farmlands near Lake Chapala, a great time to plan day trips to Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos and Atotonilquillo to attend their respective summer harvest town fairs.
