Traffic cops on prowl for emission test violations at lakeside

Although enforcement of Jalisco’s obligatory vehicle emission testing program has been lax in the lakeside area in the past, local traffic department commander Eduardo Miranda Moreno warns that officers are now on the lookout for cars and trucks lacking up-to-date inspection stickers and out-of-state models that visibly spew pollutants.

The Verificación Vehicular schedule links the month for testing with the last number on vehicle’s license plate. If the plate ends with a “one” it should be inspected during January, continuing in successive order from February through May for numbers two through five. The calendar jumps June and December, so that checks for plates ending in six through zero are due between July and November respectively.

Vehicles with expired stickers may be tested at anytime, but verification is only valid until the corresponding plate-number month rolls around again.

Fines for emission test violations currently run at about 700 pesos. However, citations qualify for cancellation if proof that the vehicle passed inspection is presented within 15 days.

“Compliance with the standard is beneficial to the environment and helps keep vehicles in optimum mechanical condition,” Miranda points out.
