AMLO eases lockdown as Mexico City deaths soar

One day after Mexico recorded its highest ever daily Covid-19 death toll (353 on May 12), President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced plans to ease restrictions and reactivate the Mexican economy by allowing some schools, businesses and industries to resume operations.

pg5aThe plans, however, are “optional,” according to the president, and can be implemented in full, in part or not at all, as state governors decide.

Nonetheless, the announcement was quickly slammed by some opponents, including Jalisco Senator Clemente Castañeda, who called the federal government’s policy “improvised” and based on insufficient information about the current spread of the virus.

Reports by several international news outlets suggest the numbers of Covid-19 cases and deaths in Mexico City are being significantly underreported. One report by Sky News showed bodies stacking up inside funeral homes and long lines of hearses waiting outside crematoriums.
