Foreign minister quits, prepares to run for president

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard announced he will be stepping down on June 12, as the presidential succession race cranked up this week.

pg1bEbrard and Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum are expected to be the leading candidates for the Morena Party nomination to succeed Andres Manuel López Obrador in 2024.

AMLO has said he would prefer all the candidates to resign their posts, insisting that the fight is fair and that party unity is maintained.

Sheinbaum, however, said that because she was elected by popular vote, she will only resign after she is selected as Morena’s candidate.

Two other candidates, Interior Minister Adán Augusto López, and Senator Ricardo Monreal, are also expected to throw their hats into the ring.
