Election interference in Jalisco a real threat, NGO says

The possibility that criminal groups will interfere in June’s federal and local elections is higher in Jalisco than in most other states in Mexico, an independent study has concluded.

The analysis by Integralia Consultores determined that the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) controls “80 percent of Jalisco territory … a hegemony that it will not want to change.”

Ensuring that “cooperative” mayors are elected in many municipalities is key to the CJNG maintaining its power and influence in Jalisco and other states, the study said.

“To build their authority, criminal groups (coerce) municipal governments, since in this way they can access valuable resources (such as the collaboration of police) to operate with impunity, diversify their activities and neutralize their rivals,” Integralia said.
