President Claudia Sheinbaum delivered a firm response Monday to recent statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, reaffirming Mexico’s sovereignty while redirecting the conversation toward what she termed one of the root causes of cartel violence: U.S. weapons trafficking and drug demand.
Trump was speaking at the launch of the “Shield of the Americas,” a military coalition with a dozen right-wing Latin American leaders designed to combat drug cartels using “lethal military force.” Mexico was notably absent from the invitation list, alongside Brazil and Colombia.
While praising Sheinbaum as a “very good person” with a “beautiful voice,” Trump described Mexico as “the epicenter of cartel violence” and reiterated his desire for the U.S. military to conduct operations on Mexican soil.
