Obituary - January 10, 2014

George Isaac Shriver passed away on December 12 at the age of 76.

Shriver was born on June 6, 1937 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and raised in Carroll County Maryland.  He graduated from Taneytown High School in 1955, and served in the U.S. Army from 1955 through 1958, working in military intelligence while stationed in Germany. After his discharge, he obtained his pilot’s license.

Shriver received his Associates Degree from Valparaiso School of Technology in 1960, and began 30-plus years of employment with Westinghouse, working first on the Stratovision program. After receiving a Bachelor’s of Science degree in electrical engineering from Perdue University in 1967, he continued with Westinghouse, working in the aerospace program as an electrical engineer, and later as a program manager.

During his middle years, Shriver occupied himself as a flight instructor and real estate agent.

After retiring from Westinghouse, Shriver took numerous and lengthy trips to various parts of world, spending three years in Guam, where he worked as a dive instructor.

In 2002 Shriver retired permanently and moved to Ajijic, where he lived until he became ill early in 2013.

Although he visited every continent in the world during his life, he said on numerous occasions that his home in Mexico was his favorite place.

In his leisure time Shriver enjoyed diving, traveling, sailing, fishing, growing fruit trees and learning and practicing foreign languages. He was genuine, honest, friendly, quirky and a friend to all. He had genuine lack of self-awareness, which was very endearing, and he rarely missed an opportunity to try to practice speaking foreign languages with complete strangers. He was enjoyed for who he was, enjoyable to watch, and will be missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.

Shriver is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Janice Johnson, his two children Bethany Danner and Stephen Shriver, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and his brothers Ronald Shriver and John Shriver.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 25, 10 a.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Hidalgo 231A, Riberas del Pilar. The church is on the mountain side of the highway, between Vigolari and S&S Auto.

In lieu of flowers please make memorial donations to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network http://www.pancan.org/section_donate/donate_now.php.
