Dengue cases on the rise

Jalisco has recorded a 264-percent rise in the number of cases of dengue fever in the first three months of the year, compared to the same period in 2012.

Dengue is a treatable but occasionally fatal tropical virus transmitted by small Aedes mosquitos which breed in standing water and typically only bite during the daytime.

There have already been 102 cases recorded in the state in 2013, according to the Jalisco Health Department (SSJ). These included 10 cases of the life-threatening hemorrhagic variety of dengue fever in the municipalities of Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Cihuatlan, Tomatlan and Casimiro Castillo.

In total, there were 505 cases of dengue in Jalisco in 2012, with just 28 having been reported in the first quarter of the year.
