Governor’s wife heads up DIF

Lorena Jassibe Arriaga, wife of Jalisco Governor Jorge Aristoteles Sandoval and newly installed president of the Desarrollo Integral de la Familia (DIF) de Jalisco, the decentralized public assistance agency, knows her own mind.

Her number one objective: Caring for her husband and their 11-year old daughter, she tells Spanish-language daily Mural.

“I’m not a politician or orator. I’m a mother, housewife, trying to work (on behalf of) families.”

Arriaga says she will make keeping families together the prime goal of her tenure. A pilot project to establish DIF centers exclusively devoted to family therapy is in the works, she says.

An honorary and unpaid position, the DIF president is not responsible for the day-to-day running of the agency but is considered  an important contributor to policy.

Arriaga says it will be important for her family to spend their weekends together, even if her husband has matters to attend to outside of Guadalajara.
