More than five million citizens are expected to take part in emergency drills in Jalisco on Friday, September 19 – Día Nacional de la Protección Civil (National Civil Protection Day).
Government offices of all levels (municipal state and federal) are expected to participate, as well as private institutions, schools and businesses.
Authorities say the drills, scheduled for noon, are vital so that people know how to carry out orderly evacuations in emergencies such as earthquakes, fires or hurricanes.
September 19 is the 29th anniversary of the devastating earthquake that rocked Mexico City in 1985, killing an estimated 10,000 people.
