World’s heaviest man dies, two months after weight-loss surgery

Andres Moreno, 37, once dubbed the world’s heaviest man, died on December 25, two months after he underwent extreme weight loss surgery at a Guadalajara clinic.

Moreno suffered a fatal heart attack as he was being taken from a hospital’s emergency room to a private clinic in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora.

1 2 16 9aAccording to local reports, Moreno felt ill on Christmas Eve but his family only decided to have him admitted to hospital after he experienced breathing difficulties the following day.

At the time of his death, Moreno weighed around 300 kilograms. At one time he weighed in at 435 kilograms (959 pounds).

At the end of October, Moreno was airlifted  from Ciudad Obregon to Guadalajara, where he underwent a 90-minute operation to remove three-quarters of his stomach and part of the duodenum. The bariatric surgery was overseen by Dr. Jose A. Castaneda of Gastric Bypass Mexico at the Arboledas Hospital in Colonia Arboledas.

The surgical intervention  reshaped what was left of his stomach into a tube to provoke a loss of appetite and prevent him from overeating.

In mid November, Moreno had emergency surgery in Ciudad Obregon after suffering from severe peritonitis. He later returned to Guadalajara, where his condition was revised by Dr. Castaneda.

Moreno was upbeat after his October operation, telling reports of the things he was looking to do in the future, such as go to a clothes store and buy a regular sized pair of pants.

He was also reported to have cried when he received a signed jersey from Real Madrid soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo.

At the time of his death, Moreno had lost 30 kilos in the two months since his operation. Castaneda had expected him to lose around 20 kilos over the course of a year.
