State to sanction companies that block free beach access

Jalisco Congress is considering new regulation that would result in hefty punishments for private entities that restrict access to beaches in the state.

Prison sentences of up to six years and fines of up to 1.5 million pesos ($86,000) could be imposed on individuals or companies that block free passage to beaches.

State deputy Ramon Guerrero Martinez believes the measure would remove all obstacles to beaches.

“Neither small hotels nor big chains, nor luxurious condominiums, nor restaurants are authorized to appropriate beaches, because they are for the enjoyment of everybody.”

The new law would put the obstruction of access to beaches on an equal footing with the obstruction of roads in the eyes of the law.

“That means up to six years in prison for those who directly prevent access to the beach,” the deputy said.
