Library cards becoming a thing of the past as Jalisco readers reach for their smartphones

The Public Library of Jalisco’s new smartphone app has dramatically increased the number of people making use of the service.

More than 1,700 people use the “virtual library” on a daily basis, six times more than the amount entering the physical “Juan Jose Arreola” library on periferico norte.

“We provide more complete information and services than we have in the physical library,” said library Director Juan Manuel Duran Juarez. “We are also opening on Saturdays and Sundays, giving us a greater reach.”

The free smartphone app allows users to consult catalogs as well as access online materials. Currently more than 7 million images are uploaded to the virtual library, including complete books and digitized files.

The app is available for download at bpej.udg.mx.
