Periferico BRT line opening delayed

The inauguration of the new BRT bus route on the Guadalajara beltway (Periferico) has been delayed until the end of January 2022, Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro has announced.

Pre-operational tests along the route, however, will start this month, he added.

A key initiative of the Alfaro administration, “Mi Macro Periférico” will see the entire central divider of the ring road converted into a bus lane, incorporating 46 “stations” along its 41.5-kilometer circular route.

The project also includes the rehabilitation of the Periférico’s laterales (lateral lanes) and sidewalks, the installation of a cycle path, plus a reforestation program involving the planting of 27,000 trees.

Once again, Alfaro stressed this week that despite the new work, the Periférico will remain a three-lane highway along its entire length.

More than 80 gas or electric-powered buses will service the route – a plan that is being developed in collaboration with the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, an international  network of megacities committed to addressing climate change. The aim is to move 400,000 passengers along the route each day.
