Jalisco gains three new ‘Magic Towns’

Jalisco will shortly boast  12 “Pueblos Magicos” (Magic Towns), after three new sites were added to the list announced by the federal government this week.

pg1b copyThis designation recognizes towns for their natural beauty, cultural richness, traditions, folklore, historical relevance, cuisine, art crafts and great hospitality, with the aim of drawing more tourists, creating jobs and attracting resources for local infrastructure.

The new towns in the state given “magical” status are Cocula, known as the “cradle of mariachi music;” Sayula, a charming and historic jewel located 97 kilometers west of Guadalajara; and Temacapulín in the northeastern Los Altos region of the state, a small and picturesque community that was saved from being inundated under the waters of the Zapotillo Dam.

This week, Tourism Minister Miguel Torruco Marqués revealed the identities of 45 new Magic Towns throughout Mexico that he said were selected from 123 recent applications. Other well-known locations obtaining the designation, in addition to the three Jalisco towns, include Zihuatanejo in Guerrero, Cozumel in Quintana Roo and Córdoba in Veracruz. Five new magic towns were added in the neighboring state of Nayarit: Ahuacatlán, Amatlán de Cañas, Ixtlán del Río, San Blas and Puerto Balleto (on the Islas Marías).  With the latest additions, Mexico now has 177 Pueblos Magicos.
