New gender quotas for elections proposed

The drive to obtain a more balanced participation of men and women in Jalisco’s political arena is moving up a gear.

This week, Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro sent an initiative to Congress to oblige political parties to nominate female candidates in at least half of the state’s 20 most populous municipalities.

Gender quota regulations passed in recent years have been designed to ensure a minimum slate of 50 percent of women in Jalisco’s municipal and legislative elections. The move has seen some positive results, especially in female representation in the state Congress, which is now 63 percent.
