Governor blames media for inducing ‘terror’

Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro has accused the local media of triggering panic in its reporting of crime, which he insists his government is tackling successfully.

pg4Highlighting official data that points to lower rates of crime in several areas, including homicides, Alfaro said that the constant reports of violent incidents in the media “seems to have the purpose of scaring people and generating an atmosphere of terror.”

Citing stats from a federal database, Alfaro said the “numbers are solid and show we are working on the right path …despite the difficult times we are living through.”

August saw the lowest number of homicides in Jalisco since 2017, Alfaro said, adding that home and property theft also fell.

However, recent high-profile incidents involving violence—the deaths of police officers and civilians in a bomb attack in Tlajomulco and the disappearance of five young men (later seen being tortured on social media)—have taken the gloss off any official crime data that paints the Jalisco government in a favorable light.
