San Pedro Itzicán community center rises

Poco a Poco San Pedro Itzican is an NGO dedicated to improving the quality of life for inhabitants of the north shore village after which it is named, as well as several other neighboring marginalized communities.

pg1bIts programs and projects have steadily grown in content and scope over the past five years, at a gradual rate as the term poco a poco (little by little) implies. The most ambitious mission to date, the development of a permanent multi-purpose community center, is now underway.

Since 2017, Poco a Poco has evolved in accordance with the long-standing and changing needs of the local people, with its many achievements assisted by a number of partner organizations.

Services include education and vocational training programs, improvement of local water and drainage infrastructure, health care, and the introduction of home-grown produce, all aimed at promoting a more vigorous and self-sufficient populace.

Health experts have identified the San Pedro-Mezcala corridor as a hot spot for chronic kidney disease, diabetes, cancer and malnutrition.

Poco a Poco shifted focus with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. San Pedro’s team of local leaders hustled to the front lines for a weekly delivery of food supplies to over 2,000 families for more than five months, and to provide medical attention to those infected with the virus.
