Nine perish as creek overflows in Autlan, Jalisco

Nine people are confirmed dead after a creek overflowed its banks in the Jalisco municipality of Autlán de Navarro in the early hours of September 25.

pg1aThe worst damage occurred in two communities, El Jalocote and La Lima, located eight kilometers north of the municipal seat of Autlan.

Neighbors said an intense storm started at around 5:30 a.m. on Monday. About half an hour later, they were woken by the sound of water cascading down the Jalocote creek, which flows down from the hills above their homes.

Residents were taken by surprise as the torrent of water poured onto their streets and into their homes, along with mud, undergrowth and the trunks and branches of trees, cut down after the spring season forest fires.

Four of the victims were from a single family, Jalisco Civil Protection said. At press time, the search continued for one person still reported as missing.
