Cops find cartel’s ‘intelligence bunkers’

The chance discovery of two clandestine video monitoring centers in Teocaltiche—a municipality in Jalisco that has experienced a recent spate of violent incidents—is further proof of the influence and reach of criminal gangs in many parts of the state.

pg1b copyA random tip-off this week led state police officers to a house where they found an “intelligence bunker” equipped with nine screens linked to cameras that had been placed in different spots around the town, allowing the criminal organization keep watch on authorities, rival gangs and citizens. A police report said officers also found radio antennas with police frequencies at the property, and notes on the movements of law enforcement agencies around the town.

A day later, a police chase resulted in the discovery of a second bunker in Teocaltiche, this time located inside a house whose exterior had been remodeled to resemble a castle—perhaps with the original idea of using it as a venue for children’s parties.  After following a suspect to the property, officers found more monitoring equipment, as well as materials for making explosive devices.

Intelligence centers operated by cartels have been found in other parts of Mexico, especially on the northern border, but the ones discovered last week in Teocaltiche are the first of their kind identified in Jalisco.
