Norma closes in on Baja

According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, as of 6 p.m. Thursday Norma had 120 mph (195 kph) maximum sustained winds and was located about 365 miles (590 kilometers) south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas.

The Center said that “a hurricane warning is in effect for the far southern portion of the Baja California peninsula, where Norma is expected to bring hurricane conditions on Saturday when it passes near or over the area.”

The Center added that “heavy rains from Norma will begin to impact the far southern portions of Baja California Sur on late Friday, continuing through Sunday. This rainfall may produce flash and urban flooding, along with possible mudslides in areas of higher terrain.”
