2024 set to be another year of extreme heat

Temperatures in some parts of Jalisco have already exceeded 40 degrees Celsius, offering a warning of what’s come over the next six or seven weeks before the expected arrival of the rainy season.

FOR NO 6A spell of anticyclonic weather (simply put, the lack of cloud cover) has caused the thermometer to soar throughout the country, according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN).

“Together with the anticyclone, we are in a global warming trend, which has allowed temperatures to persist above historical average values,” the University of Guadalajara’s (IAM) said in a statement.

A temperature of 41 degrees Celsius was recorded in the southern Jalisco town of Casimiro Castillo on April 7.

Meanwhile, metro-area Guadalajara temperatures have hovered around 32 degrees Celsius.

This week,  according to the SMN, temperatures are expected to exceed 45°C in areas of Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Veracruz, Tabasco and Campeche.

The IAM did not comment on whether temperatures in Jalisco over the next month might surpass the record levels experienced in 2023.
