Ajijic set to become autonomous municipality

By a majority vote in the Jalisco State Legislature, the Magic Town of Ajijic will break administrative ties with Chapala to become the 126th municipality in the state of Jalisco.

The recent vote was approved by all legislators except for members of the Partido Acción Nacional, acting in solidarity with Mayor Alejandro Aguirre, who stands to go down in history for losing Chapala’s principal cash cow.

Election of Ajijic’s first mayor and city Council is slated for April 1, 2026. The new independent government will be seated on July 4.

Armando’s Legacy: A favorite restaurant revival

In 1978, long before Ajijic became known as an epicenter of fine dining, Armando García Castro opened La Cabaña, a cozy restaurant located opposite the village plaza, popularized for introducing a unique menu of international cuisine.  Armando passed away in March 2022, but by good fortune, his family is reviving the memory of this pioneering restaurateur with the latest addition to the local dining scene.
