The Jalisco Culture Secretariat’s “Martes de Música y Ópera” series showcases talented classical musicians at free-of-charge Tuesday evening recitals. June 12: José Guadalupe López Luévano (guitar) and Joel Juan Qui (piano). June 19: Pianist Saúl Ulises Ibarra Ramos interprets works by Prokofiev, Ginastera, Chopin, Liszt and Ponce. June 26: María Susana Flores Rosales (soprano) and Juan Pablo García Velasco (piano) perform Puccini, Donizetti, Vivaldi, Mozart, Debussy and others. July 3: Pianist Sergio Hernandez plays works by Mozart, Schumann, Gershwin, Chopin and Ponce. July 10: Soprano Estefanía Avilez, accompanied by Timothy Ruff Welch on piano, interprets pieces and arias by Massenet, Bizet, Mozart, Rossini, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, among others.

Program two of the summer season sees JPO Musical Director Marco Parisotto conduct Mahler’s Symphony No. 6 in A minor (“Tragic”) –  considered his most “classical” symphony in its form and layout.

Talented members of the Troupe de Danse François Mauduit from France honor two creative geniuses of the 20th century: George Balanchine, regarded as the father of American ballet, and Maurice Béjart, the French-born dancer, choreographer and opera director whose major claim to fame was his majestic interpretation of Ravel’s iconic, 15-minute musical masterpiece - Bolero.

The JPO puts on a show specially for children.  Guest conductor Enrique Radillo leads the musicians in a program featuring pieces by Khachaturian, Balakirev, Maurice Ravel and Leo Delibes. The performance concludes with a rendering of Pepe Guizar’s famous tribute to his home town, “Guadalajara.”

Classic rock

Three tribute bands – Midnight Special, Wish and The Appetites – interpret  songs by rock legends Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Cure and Guns N’ Roses.

Jalisco Phiharmonic Orchestra

A single performance of Mahler’s Ninth Symphony comprises the third program of the summer series.  This work premiered in 1912 and was the final piece composed by Mahler before his death.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

The first half of the fourth program will feature two Mozart piano concertos, with invited pianists Christine Gerwig, Efraín González and Alejandro González Gerwig.  The orchestra interprets Franz Liszt’s Hunnenschlacht (The Battle of the Huns) and Wellington’s Victory, composed by Beethoven to commemorate the Duke of Wellington’s triumph over Joseph Bonaparte at the Battle of Vitoria in Spain in June 1813, in the latter section of the performance.

Slava’s Snow Show

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

The final program of the summer season sees the return to Guadalajara of virtuoso U.S. violinist Esther Yoo. The first ever artist-in-residence with the Royal Philharmonic, she will be the soloist in Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77. The performance will end with Bela Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra, Sz.116.

Folk dancers

The Ballet Folclorico Infantil de la

GR RECOMMENDS: Budapest Dance Theater

Performance by one of the biggest and most influential contemporary dance companies in Hungary, founded in 1991. The dance style of the group is European Modern Dance which contains high knowledge of classical ballet, contemporary artistic skills and different varieties of modern dance, such as the Limon, Cunningham and Graham techniques.
