Churro uncensored

pg17b

“Las Caricaturas del Pinche Churro” is the title of the exhibition of unconventional paintings by Chapala artist and man-about-town Jorge Eduardo Beltrán set to open Saturday, August 5, 7 p.m. The event is billed as a street party that will spill out of the artist’s tiny studio-gallery located on Calle Morelos near the corner of Juárez, with live music.

The collection of 10 acrylic canvases reflect Churro’s unique take on current social issues portrayed in caricatures lampooning prominent figures in the world of politics, religion and entertainment.  Typical of his irreverent style is the work depicting drug lord El Chapo Guzman, U.S. President Donald Trump and Pope Francis locked up together in a prison cell, with Mexico president Enrique Peña Nieto peeking in from the side with his cell phone

He warns that religious fanatics, uptight conservatives and narrow-minded folks may take offense at his satirical commentaries on modern life.

Churro is also well known as a founding member of the ska band Charales-K, former Rey Feo (Ugly King) of Chapala’s Carnaval celebrations and a social activist who has helped introduce art and culture to young people in the community’s down-trodden barrios.

Naked Stage audition

Auditions for the Naked Stage Reader’s Theatre production of “Private Lives” will be held Wednesday, August 9, 10 a.m. at the theater, Hidalgo 261 in Ribera del Pilar.

The play by Noel Coward will be directed by Fred Koesling.

“Private Lives” is a classic 1930 comedy of manners. It concerns a divorced couple who, while honeymooning with their new spouses, discover that they are staying in adjacent rooms at the same hotel. Despite a perpetually stormy relationship, is it possible they still have feelings for each other? Noel Coward’s biographer, Philip Hoare, wrote, “For all his comic brilliance, Coward may have been one of the greatest tragedians of his time – one whose dark amusements still ring as clear as a chilled Martini today. That is the playwright’s greatest achievement – to make us laugh so much we forget to cry.”

Koesling is looking for two women and two men. Production dates are September 22-24.  Contact Koesling with questions: This email address is being protected from spambots. Actor’s Studio Showcase.

pg18a

For the past three years, actors get together every Monday afternoon to study the craft of acting with retired professional director Roseann Wilshere at the Bravo Theatre. They study scenes and work on them until they feel they are presentation-ready and then perform them for the public.

Each short playlet is about tem minutes long and most are funny, although one or two scenes touch on the dramatic — providing the audience with a smorgasbord of theater.

Thursday, August 10, through Saturday, August 12 the group presents its fourth Actor’s Studio Showcase of scenes. Some included in this year’s showcase are from larger plays. “Jenny’s House of Joy,” by Norm Foster, takes place in a whore house in the old west in the 1800s. “Philadelphia,” a short play by David Ives, is a comedic piece about two guys who can’t seem to get out of a strange kind of Philadelphia circle and a Los Angeles circle. Another scene is from “Cemetery Club,” a funny, poignant and moving play about three Jewish widows who get together once a week to visit the cemetery.  The entire play was done at the Bravo Theatre four years ago and was a huge success.

Local writer Michael Warren is also showcased with a scene from his play “Murder by Proxy.” He is featured alongside other writers, including John Patrick Shanley, Carol Burnett, Arthur Laurents and Ivan Menchel.

Thursday and Friday shows are at 4 p.m. and Saturday’s show is at 7:30 p.m. No advance tickets are available as admission is by donation at the door.
