Cultural center
The Gonzalez Gallo Cultural Center (old train station) in Chapala is hosting the Orquesta Tipica de Autlan with 40 kids and adults playing typical Mexican instruments such as marimbas, harps, percussion, brass and strings. The concert is scheduled for Tuesday, July 17, 7 p.m. Admission is free.
Drawings
Don’t miss the opportunity to peruse the exquisite pencil drawings of Guadalajara artist Robert Aceves at an exhibition opening on Saturday, July 7, 6 p.m. at the Ajijic Cultural Center.
The anthem
The 36-voice primary school choir of Ajijic’s Instituto Loyola took the first place in the annual state competition for the singing of the Mexican National Anthem on June 15.
The choir made it to the state finals after having won both district and regional competitions promoted by the Jalisco Education Department (SEP).
Eight schools from all corners of Jalisco took part in the category “schools with music programs and teachers.” The moment of determining the order of performance was very emotional.
All that jazz
It’s their first time in Ajijic and the brass jazz duo Patrick Artero from France and Jean Pierre from Belgium are sure to please purists. They will hold forth on Friday, June 22, 7 p.m. at La Tasca Restaurant. The cover is just 30 pesos. Get set for something special.
From Puerto Rico
A choral group from the University of Puerto Rico will present an excellent program of music from that country on Wednesday, June 20, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Gonzalez Gallo Cultural Center in Chapala. Admission is free.
Art Room
The Beat Colors Art Room, a new Lakeside art gallery located upstairs at Plaza Bugambilias, celebrates its grand opening on Friday, June 15 and Saturday, June 16.
Elections
The Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) meets Monday, June 4, 10 a.m. at La Bodega Restaurant (coffee is on at 9:30 a.m.).
