Ribera Arts Review - June 27, 2014

Viva la Musica concert

Viva la Musica presents talented young pianist Sergio Parra in concert at the Auditorium La Floresta on Sunday, June 29, 4 p.m.

He will play works by Bach, Mozart, Liszt, Debussy, Zyman, as well as some of his own compositions.

Tickets for this concert are 200 pesos. They can be purchased at the Auditorium, at Diane Pearl Colecciones and the LCS box office on Thursday and Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon. In keeping with its mission to support young Mexican classical musicians, Viva la Musica will give music students free entrance to the concert.

 

LCS Summer Film Festival

The LCS 2014 Summer Film Festival begins at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 3 at the society with the showing of “The King of Masks,” a highly emotional drama about human relationships in China.

 

Photo classes

Award-winning photo artist, wedding and portrait photographer Jill Flyer is planning a series of four classes to share camera basics and composition combined with travel photography insights at 2 p.m. on Wednesdays from July 9 through July 30.

Then those who are interested in a follow-up course on photo adjustments can sign up to attend the three Photoshop classes at 2 p.m. also on Wednesdays, August 6, 13, and 20. The first two sessions will center on the basic tools of Photoshop with the third drawing participants into obtaining unusual effects with filters and plug-ins.

Flyer also conducts photo workshop day trips to interesting locations and offers photographers in-the-field advice and instruction. La Rueda Café

Kristina Trejo’s Band take to La Rueda Café Galería stage Saturday, June 28, 8 p.m.  Band members include Miguel Soto on drums, Alvaro Martinez Medeles on guitar, Gilberto Rios on the electric bass and vocals by Trejo. There is a 50-eso cover for the event.

La Rueda Café and Galería is at Porfirio Diaz 120 in San Juan Cosalá. For reservations call 33-3831-2932.

 

CASA

The two categories for the June 16 meeting of the Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic (CASA) were savory brunch main dish and muffin, sweet bread or coffee cake.

While Ian Greenwood, Patrice Bonnofous, Leia Bowers and Alex Mayberry judged the members’ entries, Barbara Passarello presented a discussion, demonstration,  and sampling of her tequila shrimp recipe. Alejandro Jimenez Ponce from Tequila Quiote and Julio Maldonado of The Tequila Educational Club of Ajijic (TECA) talked about and offered samples of excellent tequilas. 

The winner in the brunch main dish category was Pam Ladd’s sausage, potato and cheese strata with wild mushrooms. Collette Clavadetscher to second with her tomato tart and third went to Beth Cathcart’s roasted tomato, goat cheese tart with cornbread pastry.

Carole Wolff’s coffee cake delight took first in the bread judging. Second went to Rick Feldmann for his apple streusel coffee cake; and third place went to Mary Ann Waite for her coffee baba au rhum. 

People’s Choice winners were Dave Paterson’s baked black bean chili in a cup and Carole Wolff’s coffee cake. Judges selected Pam Ladd and Mary Ann Waite for best presentation.

The next CASA competition will be on Monday, July 21, 4 p.m. at Min Wah Restaurant. The summertime categories will be country fair picnic food and blue ribbon desserts.
