A reminder that lakeside’s renowned Cantos y Redes chorus will present a free performance on Saturday, August 16, 6 p.m., at the Auditorio de la Ribera, La Floresta. The lively stage show celebrating the group’s 28th anniversary will feature a repertoire of Mexican folk songs, with the 20 performers dressed in traditional costumes.

Opera Gala II

Back by popular demand, four talented singers from the Guadalajara Opera Workshop accompanied by the Orquesta Axixic Chamber Ensemble are booked for an encore appearance at Chapala’s Centro Cultural González Gallo (CCGG) on Sunday, August 24, 12:30 p.m.

The Second Gala de Opera will showcase the voices of soprano María de Jesús Cárdenas, mezzo-soprano Teresa Banderas, tenor José Luis Villaruel and baritone Ricardo Lavín, whose performance of a selection of arias by Puccini, Rossini, Mascagni and Bizet at the center last month received enthusiastic applause from a full-house audience.

The chamber group comprises accomplished local musicians Juan Pablo Medeles, first violin; Diana Laguna, second violin; Daniel Medeles, viola; Omar García, cello; and Rodrigo Martín, piano, playing under the baton of Alberto de Loza.

The performers turned up at the August 10 gathering of Open Circle to offer an enticing preview of their upcoming program. Tickets for what promises to be another first-rate sell-out performance are now on advance sale for 150 pesos at Diane Pearl Colecciones, Colon at Ocampo, and Fiaga Boutique, Morelos 7, both located in central Ajijic, and at CCGG, Avenida González Gallo 1500 in Chapala. Campuzano at La Bodega

Carmen Campuzano, one of Mexico’s foremost models of the 1990s, is bringing her “Noche Bohemia” dinner/concert to Ajijic’s La Bodega Restaurant on Friday, August 22.

The event starts at 7:30 p.m. and includes a three-course meal.  Tickets purchased in advance cost 350 pesos and go up to 400 pesos on the day of the show. Campuzano will be singing a mixture of Mexican ballads, torch songs and popular Mexican standards.

Known as a polemic diva, Campuzano, 44, started working the runway at the age of 15 and became one of the most successful models ever to come out of Mexico.

She has graced the cover of Vogue magazine a record three times, and was given the Super Model Award in 1996 in Chicago.

Life has not been easy for Campuzano. Her career as a model and actress came to a standstill when a “flesh-eating bacteria”  consumed part of her nose and face, and reconstructive surgery was subsequently botched. There have been many reports in the media over the years filled with allegations of drug and alcohol abuse, torrid love affairs, false marriages and bouts of depression. A homemade movie once surfaced where she ”shared intimacies” with then Mexican heartthrob Andres Garcia.

But no matter what life throws at Campuzano, she manages to get up, re-invent herself and continue on.
