School kids gear up for start of academic cycle

Thousands of local children will load up backpacks with pristine notebooks, brand new pencils and other implements of learning early Monday, August 20 to head off for classes on the first day of the 2012-2013 school year. Lakeside area students enrolled in the University of Guadalajara and its affiliated preparatoria high schools initiated their studies last week.

The Secretaria de Educacion Publica (SEP) calendar marks the run of the next academic cycle from August 20 through July 6 of next year.

Classroom activities will be suspended on official school holidays coming up on September 17, November 2, November 19, February 4, March 18, May 1, May 6, and May 15.  Six of those dates fall on a Monday or Friday, translating into four-day weekend breaks. The Christmas vacation period extends from December 20 through January 6, while the Easter break is set for March 25 through April 7.
