Lake Chapala Baptist

A well-known Bible verse is often misquoted.  You hear people say, “Money is the root of all evil.”  That just isn’t true.  The verse reads, “The love of money is a root of all sorts of evil.”  Money itself isn’t evil. But your heart attitude toward money can influence your decisions. The verse continues, “and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”  Paul is writing to those who profess faith in Christ and warning them to guard their heart attitude toward wealth.  God wants them to long for Him, to desire an intimate relationship with Him.  If that desire gets replaced by a longing for money it is going to cause a Christian to wander away from the faith.  That road contains some bumpy sections.  It will take you places that will cause you sorrow and pain.  All the wealth in the world ultimately belongs to God. Seek first the kingdom of God and everything else you need will be given to you.

Lake Chapala Baptist Church is at Santa Margarita 147, Riberas del Pilar. Sunday worship at 11 a.m.

Lakeside Presbyterian

Sunday, July 29, Dr. Wayne Cook poses the question: what do you think Jesus looked like? Historical portrayals show a bearded Caucasian. That is probably not accurate. The Shroud of Turin may offer hints. It is thought Jesus would be a dark-skinned man, very short by modern standards. The New Testament gives no clue of Jesus’ appearance, but does describe his inner substance. We could accurately say that Jesus looked a lot like Love.

Outreach News: Harvey Bernier, onsite project manager for building the La Zapotera Centro Communitario and the water project in that community, reports that the center has opened its doors and the first meal was served to 83 elementary school children. Thanks are given to Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Tepehua Centro Comunitario, Todd Stong, Gerardo Padilla Puga, and other key volunteers. Breakfast will be served three times a week, with the eventual aim of providing daily nutritious morning repasts. A bazaar has been established with generous donations from Tepehua and the surrounding community. Various craft classes are being set up.

Interested in volunteering? Contact LPC’s office/administrator at (376)106-0853.

Lakeside Presbyterian Church, San Jorge 250, Riberas del Pilar. English services, Sunday, 10 a.m., Spanish services, 9 a.m. Sunday School for Adults, 8:30 a.m. in the Library. Fridays, Bible Study at 9:45 a.m., in the Library.

Little Chapel by the Lake

We think of Jesus as a miraculous medical doctor healing all manner of diseases. But scripture shows him to also be something of a psychologist, every bit as concerned about people’s mental health. Over and over he urges the sick to “take courage” before he reaches out and heals. Is it because he knows that often the psychological battle can be as debilitating? Jesus can heal us of discouragement, despair, anxiety, and hopelessness if we would simply do as he says and “take courage.” Join the Little Chapel by the Lake Sunday, July 29, 11 a.m. for worship, community, and an inspiring message from Pastor Jim Andrew, sure to encourage.

After the service, guests are invited to join a comida in the fellowship hall.

The Little Chapel by the Lake is at Chapala-Ajijic Highway 10 in Chula Vista, opposite Mirasol. Information: (376) 766-2538.

San Andres English

“’We celebrate today the new Elisha who feeds his people and makes us one body, one spirit in himself.”

Fr. Basil G. Royston, D. Min., will offer the homily “Christ Who Feeds Us” at San Andres Catholic Church’s English service, Sunday, July 29, 9 a.m.

Jewish Congregation

Shabbat Torah services are held the first and third Saturday of the month, 10 a.m., and Shabbat evening services and potluck every second and fourth Friday, 6 p.m., at the Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation.

The synagogue is at Sta. Margarita 113, Riberas del Pilar (mountain side of the Carretera, diagonally across from Mom’s Restaurant). Contact (376) 766-2668 or lakechapalajewishcongregation.com.

St. Andrew’s Anglican

The Rev. Robbin del Nagro will preside and preach on Sunday, July 29.

St. Andrew’s service of Holy Eucharist begins Sunday, 10 a.m., and bilingual Sunday School starts at 9:45 a.m. Coffee hour, a time of fellowship and welcome, follows the service.

Every Sunday, Operation Feed, the program supported by St. Andrew’s, welcomes donations of non-perishable food items. Boxed milk and empty cardboard egg cartons are especially welcome, in addition to rice, beans, pasta, lentils, garbanzos, oats, oil and salt. The parish distributes this to Lakeside’s neediest families.

Every donation or consignment you make to the Todo Bueno resale shop benefits the Outreach Ministry, enabling the parish to support a number of charities around Lakeside. Todo Bueno is on the highway just west of S&S Auto in Riberas de Pilar, open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

St. Andrew’s is at Calle San Lucas 19, a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Home Church Int’l

Everyone is known to respond to various stimuli, either in a positive or negative way. I grew up patriotic and respected the U.S. flag, and got some chills when singing the national anthem at a football game. Responses seem to be formed at an early age when patterns are developed. I can remember as an adolescent when I might be sitting near the rear of the church with a buddy. Often I was not behaving properly. Parental surveillance emerged. All it took was one very meaningful look from my mother to convey the correction. I responded.

A world of experiences could be told. What about our responses as Christians, in worship or out? If we are not spiritually in tune, are we just going through the motions? Anything happening inside? Are we responding as a true child of God? Are we assured of His actual presence in our daily activities or in private or public worship? Maybe we better check our true motives in life. Pastors Paul and Susana Allen challenge all to take our relationship with the Lord seriously, knowing He’s always tuned in to us. The Lord’s Church

“What makes The Lord’s Church different?” asks Pastor Ken. “We’re not in competition with other churches. We’re not trying to get market share. We even recommend other churches for people to visit. At the same time, we’re not a family business. We’re not a pastor adoration society. We’re not an arm of a political party or a social cause. In short, we do our very best to represent God in as authentic and biblical a way as we can.”

“To do that,” says Pastor Ken, “we put great emphasis on understanding the context of Scripture – historical, cultural, and linguistic.” While Pastor Ken says The Lord’s Church (TLC) is not a Messianic Church per se, they do endeavor to understand the “Jewishness” of the Christian faith. TLC also has a very special relationship with the Messianic congregation of Synagogue Yeshua Ben David in Guadalajara, and holds combined services every month for Jewish feasts and Shabbat (Sabbath).

The Lord’s Church meets at Carretera Chapala-Jocotepec 131 in San Antonio Tlayacapan (look for the “No. 131” sign, across from the Corona castle).

Sundays, 10 a.m., enjoy praise music by Redeemed, followed at 11 a.m. by TLC’s “Extraordinary Service,” including worship, praise, communion and this week’s conversation.

The Lord’s Church is a non-denominational Christian congregation, following a biblical model of church leadership.
