Dia de Muertos art shows at lakeside

The Day of the Dead holiday is the inspiration for dozens of artists whose creations are being showcased in lakeside galleries.

pg17Destino Final (Final Destination) is the title of a collection of works by 21 artists opening Friday, October 25, 4 p.m., to run through November 22 at Chapala’s Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia, Avenida Madero at Hidalgo.  The exhibit is wrapped around the thematic statement “Death is something we should not fear, because as long as we exist, death does not, and when death exists, we do not.”

Galeria de Arte Axixic opens its doors Saturday, November 2, 3 to 7 p.m., for the inaugural reception of a Dia de Muertos collective show featuring works by both national and foreign resident artists. Guests will enjoy cocktails, botanas and music while viewing paintings, etchings, sculptures and other tyupes of artwork by Ann Engsig, Robert Vallen, Santiago Hernández, Chava Rodríguez, Xill Fesseden, Judy Dykstra Brown, Armando Toscano, Jesús E. López García, De Paul Durham, Pat apt, Isidro Xilonsochitl, Dan William, Jesús López Vaga and Gabriel Mariscal.  The exhibit will run through the end of the month, Calle Rio Zula 1 at Ocampo on the west side of Ajijic, open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Dead Days exhibit currently showing at Galeria Sol Mexicano, Colon 13 in Ajijic, includes paintings, photographs and craft items by various artists. The seasonal display and a memorial altar dedicated to pets continues through Thursday, November 3.

Build an altar!

Learn some of the history and great traditions of Dia de los Muertos, build an altar and create a calavera literaria (humorous ode to death) with Alfredo Perez, Wednesday, October 30, 10 to 1 p.m. at the Lake Chapala Society.
