St. Andrew’s church recruits Javier Zaragoza for mural

Stand-out spiritual leaders from around the world and through the ages are depicted dancing with joy in a new mural that will soon grace the interior of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar.

pg13aDistinguished Ajijic artist Javier Zaragoza, a master of realistic portraiture, was commissioned to carry out the project that he started in August and will complete prior to the church’s reopening to the public on October 18.

St. Andrew’s rector, the Reverend Robbin Moore, explained that the mural was inspired by her visit to St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church in San Francisco, California, where the rotunda is adorned with an immense parade of 90 dancing “saints” painted by iconographer Mark Dukes.

The Zaragoza mural, replicating the St. Gregory theme, replaces a swath of mirrors that had lined the north wall of the St. Andrews since the building’s former use as a dance studio. The 11 individuals appearing in the work were selected by polling the congregation on what inspirational figures best fit both the concept and available space.
