Mexico defeats US at baseball, advances to Tokyo finals

Baseball fans went home happy after Mexico closed Group A of the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Premier12 2019 with a 10-2 victory over the Netherlands at the Charros stadium in Guadalajara Tuesday.

Mexico finished Group A with a perfect 3-0 record, having also defeated the United States and the Dominican Republic.

Mexico now heads to Tokyo, Japan to play the Premier12 Super Round between November 11 and 16.

The highest ranked team in the tournament from the Americas will automatically qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Mexico earned a historic triumph Sunday, defeating the United States 8-2 in front of a partisan crowd in Guadalajara. Ali Solis drove in three runs in the eighth inning to secure the win, as Mexico’s pitching staff held the United States to only two runs.

“I’m really, really happy because of this second win, especially against a great team like the USA,” said Mexican captain Juan Gabriel Castro.  “The 28 players of this team are the key. I’m very proud of them and their approach to the tournament.”

The Mexican team will start next week’s Super Round with a 1-0 record, thanks to the victory against United States.

Also qualified for the Super Round are Chinese Taipei, Japan and the United States. The final spots in the six-nation finals will be filled by two from Australia, Korea, Cuba and Canada.
